Admissions
BRGS is a designated grammar school primarily for children who attend primary schools in Bacup, Rawtenstall and the surrounding areas. As a grammar school, our entire intake is selected on the basis of high academic ability.
We admit up to 180 students each year, based on their performance in our entrance examination, which is held each September. Children must pass the entrance examination in order to be considered for a place. However, passing the examination is not a guarantee of a place due to our over-subscription criterion.
Open Days
We will be holding parent open mornings from 9.30-11.00am on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 June 2023. The open mornings provide parents with an opportunity to meet staff and look around the school before registering their child to sit our entrance examination in September. Our main Open Evening will take place on Wednesday 20th September 2023. Students and parents are encouraged to attend the Open Evening to visit the school to view our fantastic facilities, speak to our staff and students, and to learn more about the BRGS experience. Admissions to Year 7 in September 2024
Thank you for considering Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School for your child’s secondary school. Entry to the school is by selection at our entrance examination.
Our entrance examination for Year 7 admission in September 2024 will take place on 30th September 2023. The examination will consist of three papers: verbal reasoning, maths and English. Our entrance examination is provided by GL Assessment. Familiarisation materials are available to download free of charge from the GL Assessment website.
Parents who wish their child to take the entrance examination must register in advance. Online registration for the entrance examination is now open. Please click on the register button below or go to https://brgs.applicaa.com/11plus.
The registration form must be completed by 12.00 noon on Friday 22nd September 2023. This will be the final date to register for the entrance examination.
If your child may require access arrangements on the day of the exam, please register as early as possible to allow the school sufficient time to confirm the requirements.

Admissions to the Sixth Form
Full details about admissions to our Sixth Form are available here. We hold our annual Sixth Form Open Evening during the autumn term.
The application deadline for September 2023 Sixth Form admissions has now passed; however, we will continue to consider late applications. For any late entries, please contact the Director of Sixth Form on 01706 233 400 or sixthform@brgs.org.uk.

Appeal for Year 7 Admissions in September 2023
Parents are able to appeal to an independent panel if they wish to contest the fact that their child has not been offered a Year 7 place at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School for September 2023.
If you wish to make an appeal, you will need to do so online using the Lancashire County Council online appeal form. The schools appeals information for Lancashire can be accessed here. We strongly advise you to read the guidance before submitting an appeal. BRGS is unable to advise you on appeals directly.
Our appeals are managed independently by Lancashire County Council and they will contact you directly with the specific date and time of your appeal hearing. The outcome of your appeal hearing will be communicated to you within 5 working days of the date of the appeal wherever possible.
