Year 11 History visit to Quarry Bank Mill, Styal – Friday 24 September

120 Year 11 students visited Quarry Bank Mill at Styal on Friday 24 September as part of the local study module of their History GCSE. On a lovely sunny day (at last) the students were able to develop their knowledge of Samuel Greg and why he built a mill at Styal and were able to experience first hand how a late 18th century cotton mill would have looked. They were also given a number of demonstrations to show how the mill’s machines worked. A highlight of the visit was spending time in the Apprentice House which gave them an insight into what life must have been like for young people of a similar age to them in the days when the mill was working. All the Year 11 students found the visit useful and now have to produce their coursework by the end of October. The day ended with all the group singing happy birthday to Mrs Holt, who went home with a sickly looking chocolate cake.
