As part of the English department's enrichment programme year twelve were taken to see a live literary debate, based on the questions 'How and why is violence depicted in literature? What role does it play in today's society?'

The event was hosted by Martin Amis, a well respected writer and speaker, who has won countless awards for his work.

Perhaps the most important outcome of the trip for students was to recognise that literature isn't always an archaic subject cemented in the past, but can be a living, evolving and cutting-edge discipline where society's most critical issues can be explored.
