A strange assortment of characters were released upon Rossendale as over 250 Bacup & Rawtenstall Year 13 students celebrated their Leavers Day in what has become a much anticipated annual spectacle.

Costumes ranging from Darth Vader, Willy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas, and a pack of cards to a pair of Rubix Cubes brought a colourful variety to the streets of Rawtenstall after a morning of entertainment at the Grammar School.

During the morning the students danced in the School Hall to their leaving anthem of “New York, New York” before making thank you presentations to their tutors. They saw a nostalgic DVD reminding them of happy memories of when they were younger at their Year 9 camp back in 2007 whilst one of their tutors had written a leavers song especially for the class of 2011.

A number of Awards were presented to the leavers, including Sophie Barcroft who won the coveted "Miss BRGS 2011” title— a competition in which Laura Hollins (now supermodel Agyness Deane) once came fourth!

The morning ended with many students in tears to the beautiful singing of Ellie Carrick whilst Mr Elkington re-counted some amusing memories from the leavers Primary School days wishing the students every success for the future with the words: “You are absolutely wonderful people with amazing futures stretching ahead. Our 21st Century world desperately needs people like you.”
