A Level Success Stories

Congratulations to our 6th form students on their A level results. 

 

The figures breakdown as follows:

 

• The percentage of students achieving the top grades of A* to B was 63%
• The overall achievement at A*/A was 35%
• 40 students achieved the excellent standard of three or more passes at grade A*/A.  This constitutes 20% of the year group.
• 10 students achieved 3 A* with 4 of these receiving 4 A*/As
• At least 3 students will be continuing their studies at Oxbridge with 10 students pursuing studies in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry.  A number of students are progressing to STEM-focused courses with many studying diverse courses ranging from law to nursing, psychology, business management, food science, music, journalism and Japanese.

Headteacher Alan Porteous said:  

 

"Congratulations to all of our Year 13 studenst who receive their A level results today.  At a time of continuing significant change in qualifications, these results reflect the hard work and commitment of our students and of the staff who have prepared them for these examinations.  We wish our students well as they move on to the next stage of their journey, whether to further study at university, higher level apprenticeships or into employment."

 

Case studies of some of our A level students are below:

 

Megan joined BRGS Sixth Form from Bury Church of England High School and goes on to study Law at Kings College, London.  Megan, a resident of Bury, achieved three A grades at A level, and is looking forward to studying in the capital.  Of her achievements, she says "I found the amount of content for A levels difficult, and the step up from GCSEs was quite hard; however all of my teachers always provided support, so it made my aspirations much more achievable."

 

Lily goes on to study Music after gaining an unconditional offer from Huddersfield University.  A keen musician and tenor horn player, Lily, who joined BRGS from Wardle Academy in Rochdale, gained three A levels, two of which were B grades.  

 

David is joining the increasing numbers of students who are going on to higher level apprenticeships after A levels.  David, who came to BRGS Sixth Form from Bury Church of England High School, will be working in aerospace engineering with BAE systems.

 

Natalie gained ABB at A level and has managed to secure a place on the highly sought after Child Nursing course at York University.  She faced stiff competition for places from other applicants, many of whom are mature students with plenty of life experience behind them.  Natalie, a former chair of the school's Charities Committee wanted to apply her skills and caring nature to a profession where she has seen first hand the difference it can make in the lives of those suffering illness.  Of her achievement, Natalie says:  "Studying for A Levels at BRGS is both an incredibly trying and rewarding experience, with a team who are there to support you, not only with educational struggles but disadvantages life offers.  The exams, though tinged with difficulty for me, felt like an appropriate finale to seven years of valuable education at BRGS which I am incredibly thankful for."

 

Eliza gained four A levels, three of which are A* grades, with the fourth at A grade.  Eliza, who has secured a place at Cambridge University to study Natural Sciences, says of her time at BRGS:  "Studying for my A Levels has been academically challenging but enjoyable, and I have been very happy at BRGS Sixth Form.  The atmosphere has been very friendly and thanks to the support and guidance of my teachers, I was able to take the exams feeling motivated and well prepared."

 

Mark has a place at Leeds University to study Civil Engineering after gaining three A grades at A Level.  Marks says of his achievements:  "It was great going to BRGS and studying here. The quality of teaching was very good and they always helped whenever needed which was pivotal for my exams as I could go to them for help, revision material and any struggles I had."
