Girls Under 16 Basketball: Lancashire final against St Wilfrid's, Blackburn
Having played St Wilfrid's in the group stages of the competition and beating them 25 points to 14, BRGS were favourites to win.
However, once the game got started, it was St Wilfrid's that looked to be the team who would be taking the victory, leading by 8 points to 1 at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, we changed the defence from covering the whole court to defending much nearer the basket. That had the desired effect of stopping St Wilfrid's from scoring any baskets so that by half-time the scores were level at 8 points each. Rhianne scored all 7 of BRGS's points, a couple of two's and a huge three pointer.
The third quarter was very even, St Wilfrid's scoring two baskets to BRGS's one, scored by Jess. 14 points to 12 the advantage to St Wilfrid's.
Having not played particularly well up to this point, the final quarter was probably the best basketball the team played in the entire season. Their determination to win was very evident and with a couple of quick baskets, one from Grace and one from Rhianne, BRGS took the lead by one basket.
Fully committed defence was proving too difficult for St Wilfrid's to break down but we couldn't extend our lead any further until the very last minute when Grace scored. St Wilfrid's replied almost immediately with a basket of their own.
The defending for the last 30 seconds stepped up a few levels as the girls were determined to hold on to a hard won victory, St Wilfrid's had no chance of scoring again and BRGS held on for the slenderest of victory margins, 16 points to 14.
