Spooky Writing Competition

The Charities Committee set a challenge to our students to tell the spookiest story in fifty words whilst raising money from entry fees for the school's Charities of the Year. Mrs Kirk kindly judged the competition.
In first place was Cara:
I didn't realise it was blood. At first, it was just a smudge, a smear of toothpaste or a speck of dust. Back then, it was just a stain on the hallway mirror. When I finally tried to scrape it off, it began to spread. Thick, crimson quickly filling the gilded frame. I touched it, my hand coming away, stained red. Finally, a pair of black hollow eyes stared at me, waiting to see what I would do. A mouth appeared, The scarred, deformed lips mouthed something, as if finding it difficult to manouevre themselves around the single syllable: 'RUN'
In second place was Lara:
A scuffle. A scratch. Again - a scratch...
Scratching at the window? The corner of the room?
Who could be there in the early hours? A man in a clown mask, painted red mouth like a slash of bleeding flesh? Surely I was dreaming. A cold bead of sweat ran from my temple and dripped to my pillow. Not dreaming.
I sat bolt upright, the noise immediately stopped.
Could they see me?
Slowly feet to the floor, I move to the window. I know I shouldn't...
Scratch again, movement in the corner of my eye...
A mouse scratching in my bin.
As all the clocks all struck 12, the lights turned off and everyone drifted-off in this negligible town, a cramped, forsaken graveyard (which sat on the horizon) did the opposite.
Underneath the surface of the dirt, movement occurred. The faint sound of a coffin creaking open echoed in the ground. This was followed by a hand edging it's way to the top. Suddenly, the whole floor came to life, with endless bodies creeping out of where they belong. Each body began to crawl closer to the town. As the clocks read 12:16, screams were all that could be heard...
