In today’s world, learning about the political environment is more important than ever. No matter what or who our students decide to become, they will interact with people from different countries and diverse backgrounds. It is now the case that problems taking place around the globe will, and do, impact our lives and our communities.

This year, students from years 7 to 12 have been taking part in a Model UN programme, every Friday lunchtime. They have been learning about numerous UN member states in order to prepare for a Model UN conference, with each student adopting a country and representing their interests. This year, the students have been drafting a resolution on removing barriers for children to escape poverty and they had to present possible solutions to this global problem to other member states. Students have been able to learn by becoming world leaders; they have explored new places, researched the social, political, and economic landscape of their country, shared common experiences with teammates, and made some new friends along the way.

As Model UN is a diplomatic initiative, it is a fantastic opportunity for our students to face their fear of public speaking. They have been able to develop their personal growth and self-confidence by actively debating the key issue of escaping poverty. I have to say, from a personal point of view, watching the year 7 students stand up, by themselves, in front of much older students and confidently address the issues and concerns facing their country was a most wonderful experience. The group as a whole have really begun to develop a sound understanding of international affairs and global politics. We hope to become an even bigger and better club next year by joining with other schools around the local area so keep an eye open for updates on our adventures!
