October celebrates Black History Month, an annual observance focusing on people and events in the history of black communities across the world.

This month and over the year, students have been focusing on:

ENGLISH: Black writers, poets and orators (KS3, KS4, KS5)
HISTORY: Units on slavery (KS3), the Civil Rights Movement (KS5), and persecution (KS4)
MFL: Celebration of Francophone culture across the world including Africa
MUSIC: Displays celebrating black composers
LAW: Consideration of cases involving racial discrimination (KS5)

In addition, and with support from our student-led UNICEF Steering Group, each form group was invited to nominate a historic figure from Black history for representation in the school hall with an assembly planned and due to be delivered by BRGS students the week commencing the 17th October.  The photo shows the chosen individuals which students have proposed.

In celebrating Black History Month we are also reminded of the following UN articles:

Article 2: The right to be free of discrimination of any kind.

Article 30: The rights of children belonging to ethnic, religious or linguistic minority groups.
