World Mental Health Day was on Monday 10th October with a theme to "make mental health and well-being for all a global priority" ensuring mental health is valued and protected; a world where everyone has equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and a world where there is access to the mental health care that people need. Assemblies at BRGS focused on World Mental Health Day and statistics which tell us that 60% of people wait over a year to tell the people closest to them about their difficulties and that this is particularly the case in terms of gender.  There was a focus on toxic masculinity and the phrase 'Man Up' which prevents us from seeing that expressing emotions and seeking help is a true sign of strength.  There was also a focus on stigma due to cultural factors with figures provided by the mental health charity SANE to support.

A key focus of the assemblies was the five steps to well-being and the importance of:

1. Connecting with other people

2. Being physically active

3. Learning new skills

4. Giving to others

5. Paying attention to the moment

Students were reminded of the importance of looking after their mental health on a par with their physical health and were signposted towards support within school and beyond. Students also had further assembly input from the Mental Health in Schools Team.
