UK Maths Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge successes
16 June 2023
Pupils at BRGS have again excelled in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge this year.
Over 40% of those who sat the Challenge achieved either a Gold or Silver certificate, with this figure including eight Year 9 pupils.
This is the first year in which we have entered Year 9 pupils for the Challenge, which we usually only offer to the best mathematicians in Year 10.
Six of the entrants from both years achieved a Gold certificate - Year 10 pupils Benito, Adam, Zoe, George and Eva, as well as Roy from Year 9.
Benito, Adam and Zoe qualified for the Pink Kangaroo follow-on round, while Roy and Mikolaj (Year 9) sat the Grey Kangaroo.
Roy and Mikolaj both achieved Merits in the Grey Kangaroo, placing them among some of the best performers in the country.
Maths teacher Mr Wilbraham, who organises the Challenges, said: “The pupils who sat the Intermediate Challenge have again performed extremely well this year.
“The questions involved are often abstract and unpredictable, but they are able to call on the skills and techniques learned in their regular Maths lessons and, through sheer perseverance and resilience, produce sets of answers that see them achieve good results.
“We were especially proud of the Year 9s who sat the Challenge. Last year they took the Junior Challenge and it is a big leap to Intermediate, but they were all pleased to be selected a year ahead of schedule and performed extremely well.
“This should stand them in good stead for doing the Intermediate Challenge as a Year 10 pupil next February, as well as helping to build their confidence for when they start GCSE Maths in September.”
