Welcome

I am very happy to welcome you to Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School's website and hope you find a rich source of information here about our thriving school community.

We can trace our history back to Newchurch Grammar School founded in 1703.  The core of their staff formed BRGS on our current site in 1913.  With 100 years of serving families in Rossendale and beyond, we are proud of our heritage and celebrate our school's traditions but, alongside this, we seek to embrace positive change and innovation.

There is a unique ethos throughout BRGS which provides the foundation from which students make excellent progress.  Lessons designed to stretch and inspire are a fundamental feature of school life, but this is only a small part of the story.  BRGS delivers a range of experiences through which we develop all students into the well-rounded, confident and talented young adults that you will find here.  We seek to provide the best education, give the students the greatest of opportunities and compete with the very best schools across the world.

The sense of community and pride in the school is clear as you walk around and we are proud of what we stand for.  No matter what a person's role in the school - teaching or support staff - all are working very hard to allow every one of our young people to pursue excellence in all that they do; to be committed to being the best they can be; to have ambitious goals for themselves and their future; to look for solutions to problems and learn from mistakes rather than giving up; and to develop a deep sense of respect for themselves, others, the school and the wider community.  Like any school, we are not the finished product.  We know where we need to improve and these improvements are well in hand.  We continue to seek opportunities to develop and build on our best practice because we expect high achievement and high personal standards to be the norm for every student and member of staff.

If you do come and visit us, you will find a school which is founded on, and committed to, very traditional values.  We combine this with a forward-thinking and modern approach to education.  This is a unique combination which leads to the outstanding success that the school has become famous for; we are preparing all our students for their very bright futures and producing the next generation of leaders for our country.

BRGS welcomes applications from students for entry at 11+ and 16+ and it encourages parents of prospective students to attend one of the school's Open Evenings.  In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy trawling this site and getting to know a little more about life at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School.
