Sixth Form students at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS) are celebrating today after receiving another exceptional set of results.

82% of A Levels were completed at grades A*-C, with over 60% completed at A*-B grades and 33% at the top A*-A grades.

71% of BRGS students will leave the school having achieved at least three A Levels at A*-C grade.

Nationally, this year's A Level exam results are expected to fall back in line with pre-pandemic levels, after three years of higher grades. BRGS students outperformed the national trend, with the school’s A*-C grades increasing by 3.5% compared to results in 2019, which was the last time exams took place under normal conditions.

The school’s Sixth Form students will now progress to a wide range of destinations, from securing places at some of the country’s leading universities to higher level apprenticeships or taking the first steps in their careers.

One of the school’s star performers is Callum Walsh who has secured a place to study Engineering at the University of Cambridge, having achieved A*s – the highest grade – in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Music and his Extended Project Qualification.  Not only an outstanding student, Callum is a talented musician who performs in the BRGS Sixth Form soul band, The Five Clives. Looking ahead to his exciting future, he commented: “I am overjoyed by my results!”

Ruby Leys is another gifted and hard-working Sixth Form student who achieved phenomenal results that have enabled her to secure a place at the University of Oxford. Ruby achieved A*s in Biology and Geography and an A in Chemistry, and will now study Biology at Oxford. Ruby commented:  “I’m very happy with my results and congratulations to everybody else – I cannot wait to move onto my next steps!”

Ali-Hamzah Chaudhury is also celebrating exceptional attainment at BRGS. Ali-Hamzah achieved three A grades in Chemistry, Maths and Biology. He is delighted to have secured a place to study Medicine at Liverpool University. Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Ali-Hamzah said, "I don't come from a wealthy or affluent background, so the value of hard work and gratitude was instilled into me from my parents from a young age."

Mr Johnstone, Principal at BRGS, commented, “Congratulations to all our students for achieving another set of tremendous A Level results. These excellent outcomes are testament to their hard work and determination over the last two years.

“Our commitment to fostering excellence in education remains unwavering, and our Sixth Form students should be rightly proud of what they have achieved. I look forward to hearing about the class of 2023’s future successes as they continue their studies and progress in their careers. I wish them well on their journeys!”

These outstanding results come ahead of BRGS joining Star Academies on 1 September 2023. Star Academies is one of the country's highest performing multi-academy trusts with a track record of supporting pupils to secure exceptional outcomes. BRGS, which will be the 33rd school in the Star family, will retain its grammar school status and sixth form provision when it joins Star.

There are around 350 students in the BRGS Sixth Form studying a wide range of academic courses. The school is still accepting Sixth Form applications for September 2023. Anyone interested in joining the Sixth Form is advised to contact the school between 9am – 4pm on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th August for advice and enrolment information.
