'Festive Celebration' Review
On Thursday 14th December 2006 a sell-out audience gathered for the annual ‘Festive Celebration’ – a concert featuring the combined talents of BRGS instrumentalists and singers from Years 7 – 13. The Wind Band opened the concert with rousing performance of ‘What a Feeling’ followed by ‘Blues on the Slide’ with impeccable playing from trombone soloist and Year 12 student Jonathan Parton.

Around 40 students sang in the Junior Choir, and they combined with form 7B for a rousing performance of this Year’s Song for Peace, accompanied by the Wind Band. The Junior Choir then sang a selection of Christmas favourites, including a moving performance of ‘Fields of Gold’.

A wealth of singing talent was firmly on display. Solos were sung by Olivia Sloss (‘I Deramed a Dream’), Hannah Potts (‘Walking in the Air’) and Katie Brown, who did an excellent version of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, accompanied by Tom Hyatt and the Firebrats.

‘Vandolin’, featuring Michael Giverin and Nicola Costello, played an entertaining set combining traditional Irish folk tunes with Christmas favourites! The Senior Choir performed ‘Mad World’ with Helen Beck as soloist, ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen and the concert ended with the combined Junior and Senior Choirs singing ‘You Raise Me Up’, with solos for Scott Bellas, James Hesketh and Holly Goldsworthy. These were accompanied on our new grand piano by James Mitchell.

All in all, it was a great night for the BRGS musicians – the next concert is on February 7th and will feature musicians from Years 7-11, playing solo and ensemble items. Hope to see you there!
