Year 10 Row the Channel For Comic Relief March 2009
15 March 2009
As part of the activities raising money for Comic Relief 2009, a group of Year 10 students attempted the arduous challenge of rowing the equivalent in miles of the width of the English Channel!
The team of eight, together with the support of Mr Morris, Mr Williamson and Mr Baird rowed a staggering 34km, each undertaking two demanding legs of 1,700m.
Appearing in fancy dress for the challenge they were spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd of staff and students to complete the distance in an outstanding 2 hours, 14 minutes and 4 seconds. They sliced a massive 56 seconds off their target and rowed at the same speed as the Dover Calais car ferry!
Hoping to raise a total of £500, the dedicated footballers intend to donate the money raised to Water Aid, a charity whose mission is “to overcome poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.”
