Orienteering Autumn 2011

BACUP AND RAWTENSTALL GRAMMAR SCHOOL ORIENTEERING SQUAD 2011 – 2012

The British Schools’ Orienteering Championships took place at Beecraigs Country Park near Linlithgow in Scotland, during the Autumn term.

Over 1000 pupils made the journey from all over the UK to enjoy a weekend packed full of fun and orienteering. The weather held for most of the weekend and everybody was in great spirits due mainly to the scary ghost tour that everyone enjoyed on the Saturday evening in Edinburgh.

The best individual performances came from Jamie Hoyle (Year 9 Boys) who finished in 7th place, Charlotte Jackson (Year 13 Girls) who finished 8th and Hannah Goldswain (Year 9 Girls) who finished 10th on what was her first British Championships.

The best team performance was the Year 9 Boys Team (Jamie Hoyle, Lewis Robinson and George Tanner) who just missed a podium position finishing in fourth place.

A great team spirit was shown by the Year 7 Boys’ team who all gathered at the finish to cheer each other in. Although not winning any medals this year, they have the potential to go on to become a winning combination.

The team were ably looked after by Mrs Sellens, and parents Mrs Hoyle and Mr Robinson. All our student orienteers ran for the local club, Pendle Forest Orienteers.

The NW round of the CompassSport Trophy took place on Askham Fell near Pooley Bridge in Cumbria. Over 400 competitors from the major NW clubs competed for a place in the Final. In the Small Clubs’ category, Pendle Forest Orienteers were competing against Borderliners, SELOC and SOLWAY. BRGS juniors played a big part in this prestigious orienteering event and were instrumental in the final, very close result.

The best individual performances came from George Tanner and Corinna Howarth who won their respective classes, scoring 100 points each. Also adding to the overall score were Charlotte Jackson, Lydia Lambert and Max Sutcliffe, all on 96 points.

The final scores were as follows:

PFO (including BRGS Juniors) 1265, Borderliners 1261, SELOC 1204, SOLWAY 744

The team will now go through to the final in September to compete against the winners of all the other regions. Well done to all the BRGS Orienteering Team!
