Four 6th form students (Mark, Joseph, James and Claudia) represented BRGS in the annual Cambridge Schools' Debating Competition held at Manchester Grammar School.

The teams performed exceptionally well against some tough competition.  Students are thrown in the deep end being given a motion to debate with only fifteen minutes preparation time to respond to a range of topics and prepare individual five minute speeches.  The diverse subjects which the students had to grapple with included:

  • This House supports penalty enhancements for hate crimes.
  • This House would nationalise all of Britain's railways.
  • This House would punish the UK for its BREXIT decision.
  • This House means a minimal state is justified.

This was the first competitive debate for many of the students with BRGS teams coming first and second in some of the rounds - a great achievement!
