Students are celebrating receiving their A level results today – with more than seven in 10 students achieving the top grades of A* to B.

The results follow two years of unprecedented challenges for this cohort of students, whose learning was disrupted by Covid and lockdowns that saw the GCSE exams they would have taken in 2020 cancelled, and schools shut several times with online learning introduced.

In spite of these challenges:

  • 70.3% of students achieved the top grades of A* to B
  • Overall achievement at A*/A was 45%
  • 55 students achieved at least three grades of A* or A – more than a quarter of the year group
  • 14 students achieved at least three A* grades – two of whom received four A* grades and one receiving five A* grades

At least three students will be continuing their studies at Oxbridge after winning places at the leading universities and six students so far will pursue university studies in medicine and dentistry. A number of students are progressing to STEM-focused university courses with many studying diverse courses ranging from law to nursing, psychology, business management, journalism and Japanese.

James Johnstone, Deputy Headteacher of Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, said:

“Congratulations to all of our Year 13 students who receive their A level results today. After the disruption in recent years, it is a pleasure to see them get the recognition they deserve with their results. These results reflect the hard work and commitment of our remarkable students and our brilliant staff who have prepared them for these examinations. We wish our students well as they move on to the next stage of their journey, whether to further study at university, higher level apprenticeships, or into employment.”
