Special Educational Needs Information Report 2022

 BRGS Local Offer

Some students have an additional need during their school career. BRGS works hard to ensure that learning is accessible for all.  Students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or requiring additional learning support are supported through a coordinated approach involving the Student Services Team, Subject Teachers, Form Tutors and parents/carers to maximise progress whilst implementing the Code of Practice.

The SENCO at BRGS is Miss Gauntlett.  To contact Miss Gauntlett please email ecg@brgs.org.uk or phone 01706 234500.

At BRGS, we focus on quality first teaching in the classroom-setting to enable our students to make good progress.

Our team of Teaching Assistants and broader student support team offer support for a range of SEND, including specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia); physical difficulties (including visual and hearing impairments as well as medical-related difficulties); cognitive and communication needs (e.g. autism) and social, emotional and mental health needs (e.g. ADHD); whilst recognising that many of these difficulties can overlap and do not always fit neatly into one particular need.

Extra support is provided through liaison with external professionals such as regular Educational Psychologist input, Child and Family Well-Being support, ELCAS (East Lancashire Child and Adolescent Services), counsellors and organisations providing high quality support such as Understanding Autism and Reachout ASC. The school liaises closely with other external agencies such as Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and the Eating Disorder Service.  We also have a school nurse on site full time who is able to provide significant expertise in supporting our students.

In addition, we provide extra support through:

  • IDL (Indirect Dyslexia Learning)
  • Social Skills Groups
  • Handwriting Support
  • Laptop provision for students who struggle with their motor skills
  • RNIB Book Share
  • Pre-school nurture group
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health support work through our pastoral team.
  • After-school SEND homework support group

The SENCO works closely with teachers to offer support with strategies to support learning, with an Educational Psychologist adding further valuable input into the teaching strategies and reasonable adjustments required to support our students who have a SEND.  Teachers have comprehensive and tailored guidance notes advising how best to support individual students with students co-constructing their support and needs in liaison with families to develop one-page profiles and targets.

Lancashire SEND Partnership was formed following the Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) joint inspection of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) services in Lancashire. The partnership brings together all the agencies in Lancashire providing SEND services for children, young people, their parents and carers with the intention of ensuring that all can work together to provide the best outcomes for young people.

For further information and regular updates about the changes taking place please see the SEND local offer websiteview their event listings on Eventbrite or view their Facebook page.
